The blank inside of a card is one of the more existentially unsettling experiences a person can have. You bought the card. You signed it. Now there's an entire blank space staring at you and you have no idea what to put there. Here's a framework that works.
The 4-line formula for any funny birthday card
Every great handwritten birthday note has four parts. You don't have to use all four — but if you're stuck, this is the cheat code.
- The opener. Something that's not just "Happy Birthday" because the card already says that.
- The joke or honest observation. One line that sounds like you.
- The actual sentiment. A real thing you mean, even if it's small.
- The signoff. Sign it like a person, not a corporate executive.
Examples that follow the formula
For your best friend
Hey idiot,
Another year of you texting me at 2am. I will continue to respond, against my better judgment.
Genuinely though, glad you're around. Hope this year is better than the last one (low bar).
Love,
[Your name]
For a partner
Birthday person,
You're getting older. I'm watching it happen in real time. It's going pretty well.
I love you. I'm glad we picked each other.
Yours forever (or until you read what's actually inside this card),
[Your name]
For a coworker you actually like
Happy birthday —
The fact that we both endure these meetings has bonded us in ways HR could never understand.
Hope your birthday is significantly more enjoyable than our last all-hands.
Cheers,
[Your name]
What NOT to write
- "Hope this year brings you joy and happiness." This is not a sentiment. This is a placeholder.
- "Many happy returns of the day." No one knows what this means and no one is going to ask.
- "You're not getting older, you're getting better." They are getting older. The card is the joke.
- Anything you'd find on a coffee mug at TJ Maxx. If it's mass-produced sentiment, it's not yours.
Quick swaps to make any message sound more like you
| Generic | Better |
|---|---|
| "Wishing you joy" | "Hope you actually enjoy this year for once" |
| "You're a wonderful person" | "You're tolerable in significant doses" |
| "Many blessings" | "Hope you don't lose your job" |
| "All the best" | "At least 60% of the best" |
One last note
The card itself does most of the work. If the card already says something funny on the front, your job inside is easier — you're agreeing with the joke, adding context, and signing off. If the card front is generic, your inside has to carry the whole thing.
